It is impossible to purchase a true ceremonial Navajo sandpainting –
medicine men and their assistants paint those on the ground of a ceremonial
Hogan, specifically for the intended patient and the particular ceremony.
However, Navajo artists have created reproductions of the symbols and the
stories that appear in these ceremonial sandpaintings. These artists also
use the sandpainting technique to create contemporary
artwork that depicts scenes taken from Native American life – or whatever
else they choose.
The sandpaintings available at
Verkamps are as varied in their style as they are in their sizes and frames.
We feature paintings by artists such as the
world-renowned
Ben family, Hosteen Etsitty, Frank Martin, Sammy Myerson. The styles range from a 4”
x 4” simple yei figure, to a contemporary, museum quality 48” x 15”
depiction of the “Arrival of Twilight” by Joe Ben, Jr.
