Wide Ruins is the most
elaborate banded rug style, and is usually the most finely woven of this
type of rug. Sallie Lippincott developed it in 1939-40. She discouraged
elaborate designs, and instead promoted simple horizontal stripes and bands
constructed of total vegetal colors and hand spun wool. Overall simplicity
is intended, although ornamentation is quite complex. The panel designs are
simplified forms of arrows, chevrons, and squash blossoms. The attention to
detail in this design approaches true artful expression.
