The storm rug is the only rug
where you will find the abstract portrayal of a natural event, the Navajo’s
symbolism of a storm. The central rectangle represents the center of the
universe. The four corner rectangles represent the four sacred mountains
that are the boundaries of the Navajos. The zigzag “lightning” connects the
corners with the center. These rugs usually have a dark border with
geometric “teeth”. The space between the main design & the border usually
contains stylized elements such as clouds, water beetles, arrows, feathers,
and other geometric designs.
