Trader John Lorenzo Hubbell was the first to popularize this rug by promoting them by catalog to households in the eastern states.  They are named for the little town of Ganado, where in 1878 Hubbell founded a trading post.  The Ganado rug always has a red background and typically has a dark border.  The corners and the edges are usually embellished with geometric designs surrounding a central diamond or two.  Because of its long history many people consider a Ganado rug as a “classic” Navajo style.  Ganado was named for a very important Navajo leader whom the Spanish called Ganado Mucho, or “Many Cattle.”
