The
Santa Clara
Pueblo, located on the Rio Grande River in northern New Mexico, is famous
for its carved black- and red-ware, as well as its polychrome pottery. The
unique black finish is created by smothering the fire of the primitive
open-air kiln with pulverized dung toward the end of the burning process.
The heavy black smoke, thus created, penetrates the walls of the pottery,
making them black throughout. Unique Santa Clara images such as the bear paw
and the water serpent are carved into the leather hard pots, then they are
hand-polished using a river stone to create the superior, high gloss.
Verkamp’s
is proud to carry an extensive collection of Santa Clara pottery pieces by
award- winning artists such as Anna Archuleta, Margaret Gutierrez, the
Tafoya family, Stella and Denise Chavarria, Victor and Naomi Eckleberry,
Anita Suazo - and so on. We also feature pieces that are not of collector
quality, but are still fine examples of Santa Clara pottery.
