Historically, the Jemez people on the Rio Grande have not been as well known
for their pottery as neighboring pueblos. Today, they are working hard to
create their own style of pottery, with very simple and classic designs -
and have made a mark for themselves in today's fine art world.
The
history behind Jemez pottery is actually pretty interesting. Back in the
1960's, it was easy to find their work on the roadside souvenir stands. The
pottery was created solely for the purpose of attracting tourists into the
roadside stands. Each piece was decorated with very bright colors applied
with poster paints. The bold color schemes made it easy for passing
motorists to spot the Native American pottery, and stop in to take a look
around the stand. These pieces are fun to collect as they are not
particularly easy to find anymore.
