Hopi
artists living primarily on the first Mesa in northeastern Arizona make
these pieces of pottery. Hand-coiled and formed without the use of a
potter’s wheel, firing is done the old-fashioned way using cedar chips,
bark, coal, and dried sheep or horse dung. Dry pots are first polished to a
high sheen decorated with slips of various colored clays, then fired in an
outdoor kiln built by the potter. Color variations known as smoke or fire
clouds are highly prized on most Hopi pieces. Motifs used on the pots
include rain images, birds, and abstracts with fine stippled lines.
