Horsehair
pottery is a relatively new form of greenware.
After the shape has been created using a mold, it is fired by hand using a
special technique, which is both hazardous and time consuming. While the
piece is being fired, horsehair is added to it by hand. The resulting
designs seen on the finished piece are the burnt remains of this horsehair.
Firing is a dangerous task to perform as the horsehair may ignite during the
process, injuring the artist. Fine lines are created with the hair from the
mane of the horse, and thick lines are created from the hair of the tail.
Some artists are using feathers and other porous materials to add other very
intricate designs. After the pot is fired, it is then rock polished.
Additional designs may be added using various paints and carvings, as well
as inlaid stones.
