The Tarahumara Indians live in Mexico in an area
known as Copper Canyon – an area similar to the Grand Canyon. The Tarahumara
are known for their ability to run long distances and for their artistic
creation of finely woven baskets. These baskets are typically handwoven
using pine needles and sotol, a
relative to the yucca.
The materials are collected
by hand and then prepared for the weaving process. The baskets can be either a
“single-weave” or a “double-weave”. With the double-woven baskets the
weaver will start at the bottom, weaving the inside layer. Then the top is
folded over and the weaving is continued down the outside. This
method creates a smooth finish where it is difficult to tell where the weaving
first began and where it finished.
As we stated above, the Tarahumara live in
Mexico and not in the United States. So while the baskets technically don't
fit the category of "Native American Baskets," we feel the artistry
and skill displayed in the making of these baskets warrants their inclusion
in our inventory.
These baskets are available in various natural
colors and sizes not shown here. To
