The style known as "coil weave" was first
found on the Second Hopi Mesa in the 1800's. While it is considered a
weave, the technique is really more closely related to sewing. On the
truly fine baskets, the stitches are so tight that the baskets are
often used to hold small seeds. On Second Mesa, they are used in much
the same way as the wicker is used on Third Mesa - as repayment
offerings, gifts and in kachina ceremonies. |
